Craft Year 2007:

An Exceptional Year

Letter from Maegen Black of The Canadian Crafts Federation:

Hello, All

It seems like only yesterday Craft Year 2007 was just getting started – and yet here we are in the final month.  At the time of this email, there are officially 709 events listed on the Craft Year website, a number far beyond original expectations for the year.  Of all the exceptional events, activities, and milestones Craft Year 2007 has spawned, the sheer number of events is the most powerful.  My experiences explaining the growth of Craft Year 2007 to government officials, funding bodies and international organizations have been very positive, as the response from everyone has ranged from ‘pleasantly surprised’ to ‘genuinely impressed’.  For that reason and so many others, Craft Year 2007 has been an exceptional success.

If you regret having not submitted information about a particular event, then listen up! We are still accepting information about fine craft focused events that took place during the year. We want to make sure the most complete picture has been captured of Craft in Canada during 2007.  Please check out www.craftyear2007.ca to submit information about your event (go to PARTICIPATE then SUBMIT in the main menu).

A round of thanks is definitely in order to all the councils, their members, staff and volunteers, for the stellar work that took place this year. Without all of you, Craft Year would not have happened. I hope you have all marked your calendars, and are brainstorming away over the next Craft Year festival – scheduled for 2012.

Though Craft Year 2007 officially ends with the CCF/FCMA Annual General Meeting in Toronto, (February 21st – 24th) we still have work to do to ‘wrap up’ the event.  Attached to this email you will find a FEEDBACK form.  Your responses are important – they will help us create content for the CCF/FCMA’s Craft Year 2007 wrap-up document, a report which will detail the events, ideas, concepts and successes of the Craft Year Project. We want to hear from you – fill out the form and tell us how Craft Year 2007 affected you and your organization.  We are looking for comments, quotes, statistics, and especially PHOTOS.

If you have not visited recently, take another look at the Craft Year website. The featured artist has been updated and now shows the work of Saskatchewan’s own Michael Hosaluk: woodworker, collaborator and Saidye Bronfman Award winner. There are also nine new, specially commissioned articles written by a number of top Canadian craft authors.  Check them out at www.craftyear2007.ca

Best wishes,
Maegen Maegen Black
