20 UNDER 30 Call for Entry
June 21 - July 29, 2012

The Ontario Crafts Council (OCC) is committed to fostering a new generation of craft professionals. 20 UNDER 30 offers an opportunity for the next up-and-coming set of young makers to share their work with the craft community and public at large. We want to see what you’re doing, what you’re thinking about, and the amazing objects that you make!
The jurors for 20 UNDER 30 are Noa Bronstein, Arounna Khounnoraj and Stuart Reid.
Conditions of Entry
- The call is open to anyone 30 years of age and younger.
- Works in all craft-related media will be accepted for review by the jury.
- Each applicant may submit a maximum of three works.
- A set of multiples (such as a sculptural grouping) will be considered as a single work.
- Submissions must include an entry fee of either $35 for non-OCC members or $25 for members (see below for payment details).
- Submissions must include an artist statement.
- Submissions must include digital images (see the image requirements section for more information).
- Submission to the Call for Entry grants the OCC permission to use images of accepted works for OCC-related promotional purposes including web and print material.
- Late or incomplete entries will not be accepted.
Exhibition Information
- A total of 20 works will be chosen for the exhibition by the jury.
- Jurors will be looking for submissions that show innovative, fresh work that successfully blends concept with technical skill.
- Works included in the exhibition must be for sale, and will be sold under the OCC consignment arrangement of 55% for the artist and 45% for the Gallery.
- The Exhibitor will be responsible for insuring all work during shipping and delivery. The OCC will insure all items for theft and damage while on the Gallery premises.
- Works accepted for exhibition will be delivered/shipped to the OCC Gallery at the Exhibitor’s expense by Monday, June 18, 2012. At the conclusion of the exhibition the Exhibitor must pick up/ship all unsold work from the OCC Gallery by August 4, 2012.
- Application materials will not be returned.
Jurors
Noa Bronstein received her Master of Information from the University of Toronto, where she studied museum and archival studies. She has been active in the cultural and not-for-profit sector for several years and has worked for such organizations as Paperny Films, a Vancouver-based documentary film company, the Bata Shoe Museum and most recently was the Director of Public Programming and an Acting Curator at the Design Exchange. She has curated several exhibitions including Come Up To My Room, Out of Sorts: Print Culture & Book Design and Play > Nation: Canada’s Outdoor Culture. Currently, Noa is the Director of Exhibitions & Cultural Promotions at the Gladstone Hotel.
Arounna Khounnoraj. Bookhou is a small family run business that believes in slow design and each piece we make is made one at a time, by hand. The company is co-runned by husband and wife duo John Booth and Arounna Khounnoraj. Arounna Khounnoraj received her education from the Ontario College of Art, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and a MFA from the University of Waterloo. She is currently exploring pattern and image in her textiles and sculptures.
Stuart Reid is Director/Curator of Rodman Hall Art Centre at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario. From 2009 through 2011, he was Executive Director of the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina, one of Western Canada’s premiere venues for contemporary art. He has also served as Director/Curator of the Tom Thomson Art Gallery in Owen Sound (2001-2009), was Curator of the Art Gallery of Mississauga (1992-2001), and Associate Curator at the Ontario Crafts Council (1990-92). In 2002, Reid attended the prestigious MLI (Museum Leadership Institute) at the Getty Leadership Institute hosted by the J. Paul Getty Trust at the University of California at Berkeley. He is the author of over 60 exhibition catalogues and several published books including The Art of Tim Jocelyn, Celebrating Life: The Art of Doris McCarthy and Cities: John Hartman. While engaged with public art galleries, he has also maintained an active role as a writer on contemporary Canadian visual art and craft practice in the broader national and international communities.
Time Line
Deadline: Applications must reach the OCC offices no later than Friday, June 8, 2012, 5:00 pm.
Notification of Acceptance: All applicants will be notified of the jury’s decision via email by Tuesday, June 12, 2012. Please make sure your email information is correct on the Call for Entry form.
Delivery: Successful applicants will be required to deliver selected works to the OCC Gallery no later than Monday, June 18, 2012, 5:00 p.m.
Dates and Opening Reception: The exhibition will take place from Thursday, June 21 to Sunday, July 29, 2012, with the opening reception on Thursday, June 28, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Entry Fees
Submissions will not be reviewed unless they are accompanied by the application fee. Non-members of the OCC are required to pay a $35 entry fee, and OCC members a $25 entry fee. Fees are non-refundable. To make a payment, you can either:

Image Requirements
1. Select up to two print-ready digital images per work submitted (six images in total).
2. Prepare images by using the following specifications: 300 DPI, in .jpg format and with the longest side equaling or exceeding 1200 pixels. Save them on a CD, along with a digital copy of your artist statement.
3. Format your image file names without spaces or capitalization. The format should be as follows: first 3
letters of your first name followed by the first 3 letters of your last name, then underscore “ _ ” , and finally the number of the image from 01 to 06. Examples for ‘John Smith’: johsmi_01.jpg, johsmi_02.jpg, etc.

Entries can be submitted electronically through Dropbox. Use your own Dropbox account, create a single folder (including the Call for Entry form, your digital images and artist statement), title the folder with your full name, then ‘Share’ it with gallery@craft.on.ca.
