CraftTalks:

Sarah Hall

 

Date: Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Cost: Free

Presented in collaboration by the OCC and OCAD's Material Art & Design Program, Sarah Hall will discuss the integration of art and solar technology, and how her work is breaking ground in North America by conciously fusing image and energy. In 2002 Hall was elected into membership of the Royal Canadian Academ y of Art, and her most recent project using photovoltaicc technology, the Lux Nova Tower in Vancouver, was recognized by the Design Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects in 2008.

CraftTalks:

Gord Peteran

Cost: Free

Presented in collaboration by the OCC and OCAD's Material Art & Design Program, Peteran will discuss Gord Peteran:Furniture Meets its Maker, an exhibition of his work curated by Glenn Adamson, and currently on display at the University of Toronto Art Centre until December 5th. The psychological and conceptual content of Peteran’s work places it in a distinct boundary-crossing category while working with fine cabinetry, found objects, assemblage and sculptural processes.

CraftTalks:

Masterworks East Exhibition Discussion Featuring Karel Aelterman, Paula Murray, Chanlder Swain and Penelope Kokkinos

Featured speakers will discuss their experience – their background, why they make, how they make, and what inspires them with a question and answer period after each talk. Talks will be conducted in English, but a bilingual question period will be available for audience members with artists Karel Aelterman and Paula Murray.

Ontario Arts Council Crafts Grant Session with Lisa Wöhrle, Associate Visual and Media Arts Officer at the Ontario Arts Council

Do you have an upcoming project that could use some financial help, or are you already in the middle of putting a grant application together? Join us on Tuesday, September 29th, 4:00 – 6:00 pm and make sure you get updated with everything you need to make a strong application.

The Ontario Arts Council’s next upcoming project grant deadline for craft is October 15th, and Lisa Wöhrle will help walk you through the process of putting together all the essential pieces of your grant application: artists’ statement/proposal, resume, budget, as well as the how-to’s of submitting your visual images. The grant application process can be daunting but Lisa is available to help demystify the process. If you like, bring your draft proposal along, questions ready.

Furthermore, the OCC has become a province-wide recommender for OAC Exhibition Assistance grants, specifically for craft! So, if you have an upcoming exhibition confirmed (taking place before November 2010), you should consider applying for our next deadline on November 16th, 2009. AHCF, AFCY, CARFAC Ontario and OCC are pleased to offer a professional development day for craftspeople, visual artists and educators during TAC’s Fall Focus on the Arts! Participants from diverse practices will explore a holistic approach to self-care strategies, and discover steps to creating safe and healthy workspaces. The agenda will begin with Ted Rickard focusing on tips to protect against harmful chemical exposure and product handling, followed by naturopathic support options with Dr. Jean-Jacques Dugoua, a CARFAC information session, and an introduction to The Feldenkrais Method®, a gentle approach to pain-free movement, with Karen Bowes-Sewell.
 
This event is intended for visual artists, craft professionals, educators and health care practitioners with an interest in the subject. Refreshments and a light lunch will be provided, along with an opportunity to tour the Artists’ Health Centre, a one-of-a-kind facility offering specialized care for professional performing and creative artists. For your comfort, this is a scent-free workshop. Please refrain from wearing any perfume, cologne, aftershave or scented products. Thank you.
 
Ted Rickard MLS, MEd, CRSP, was the Manager of Health &  Safety at Ontario College of Art & Design from1988-2007. While  at OCAD Ted’s educational mandate reached all aspects of health  and safety within the College including teaching students, faculty  and staff. A leading expert in this field, Ted has advised on health  and safety issues for many individuals, institutions and organizations  including Art Gallery of Ontario’s Conservation Department,  Art Hazards Resource Association and Toronto School of Art.
 
Dr. Jean-Jacques Dugoua HBSc, ND, PhD (cand.), is a licensed  naturopathic doctor and the Clinic Director of the Liberty Clinic  in downtown Toronto. He is the first naturopathic doctor to practice  at the Toronto Western Hospital as well as the Artists’ Health  Centre. An avid public speaker, Dr.JJ has given presentations to  pharmacists, medical professionals, government, academics, artists  and musicians, students, teachers and the general public.
 
Karen Bowes-Sewell is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais  Practitioner, member of the Feldenkrais Guild of North America  and a guest practitioner at Pivot Sport Medicine and Orthopaedics  and the Feldenkrais Centre in Toronto. She is an associate professor  in Dance at York University, a graduate of the National Ballet School  and former principal dancer with the National Ballet of Canada.  Her research focuses on issues of teaching and learning, with an  emphasis on non-traditional methods of learning. 

Artists' Health Centre Foundation (AHCF) was founded in 1997 by a group of artists and community leaders committed to promoting the well being of professional creative and performing artists. In addition to providing leadership and support for programs and services at the Al and Malka Green Artists’ Health Centre, co-founded in 2002 in partnership with the Toronto Western Hospital, the organization provides education, advocacy, outreach and prevention services and resources to professional artists and students and staff in professional post secondary arts training programs.

Arts For Children and Youth (AFCY) engages young people living in priority neighborhoods in high quality and accessible arts educational programming that is meaningful, relevant and collaboratively developed with community and education partners. AFCY positions arts programs in schools and neighborhood venues as a means to build community, and empower marginalized children and youth to reach their full potential through the arts and social contributions.
