G8 and G20 Summit Craft now available at The Guild Shop!

Thursday, July 8 to Friday, July 23

The Guild Shop is pleased to offer the public an opportunity to own craft objects used to adorn the meeting rooms, leaders’ offices, and corridors of the 2010 Muskoka G8 and the Toronto G20 Summits.

Interior Designer Bruce Forster, hired to “develop a fine-art strategy” for the summits, approached the OCC to curate the craft component of the Canadian Collection at the summits. The Ontario Crafts Council was pleased to lend their expertise in the areas of glass, ceramics, wood, fibre, metal, and furniture and to contribute on an international scale to the representation of Canada’s creative community.

Working in partnership with leading galleries across the province, along with incorporating works returning from the international exhibition Unity & Diversity, which was displayed as part of Canada’s guest country appearance at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale, South Korea, the OCC selected approximately 150 pieces to grace the two summit locations.

The works for sale are crafted by some of Canada’s most established and skilled makers. Among the items available for purchase are over thirty-five unique vessels used by the Ikebana Society of Canada for the summit floral arrangements, as well as a selection of paperweights designed for placement on each of the leader’s desks.

The works will be available to view and purchase at The Guild Shop beginning Thursday, July 8. Please join us for the opening reception from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.

The Ontario Crafts Council at the G8 and G20 2010 Summits!

The Ontario Crafts Council is thrilled to announce their involvement in curating the craft component of the Canadian Collection at the 2010 Muskoka G8 Summit and the Toronto G20 Summit.

Interior Designer Bruce Forster, hired to “develop a fine-art strategy” for the summits, approached the OCC for their expertise in the areas of glass, ceramics, wood, fibre, metal and furniture.  “The eyes of the world will be on Canada.  Placing craft in the context of such a high profile event provides a significant opportunity to raise awareness of arts and culture.” says Emma Quin, Executive Director of the OCC.  “Canadian fine craft, art and design will add a personal touch to the existing décor during dinners, events and press conferences.  The result will be a stunning representation of Canada’s creative community.”

Working in partnership with leading galleries across the province, along with incorporating works returning from the international exhibition Unity & Diversity, which was displayed as part of Canada’s guest country appearance at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale, South Korea, the OCC selected approximately 150 pieces to grace the two locations.  In addition to providing over thirty-five vessels for the Ikebana Society of Canada to use for their floral arrangements, the OCC staff also worked with several prominent glass artists for placement of paperweights on each of the leader’s desks and in creating water glasses for the leader’s luncheon in Huntsville.

Stay tuned for an online exhibition of the Canadian Craft Collection here on the OCC Website.  Also, selected works from both summits will be featured in a mini retail focused exhibition at the OCC’s retail location The Guild Shop. See top of page for details.
