In celebration of the 5th Anniversary of Ontario’s Greenbelt, the Ontario Crafts Council and the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation have come together to create a dynamic community quilt: the Quilt of Possibilities. Burkhard Mausberg, President of the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation, explains that “Quilts have a meaning and significance well beyond the finished product: they are as much about how they’re produced and the stories they tell. They bring people together to participate in a ritual that is steeped in tradition and yet results in something that is new and exciting.”
With this in mind, a call for submissions was put out to a diverse network of craftspeople, organizations and the public to create a square that would help make up the whole of the final community quilt. Participants were encouraged to share their ideas and memories of what the Greenbelt means to them, how it has impacted and enriched their lives, and to explore how possibilities grow in the Greenbelt.
When the call closed over 60 squares were received from across Ontario and other provinces, and even as far away as Switzerland. Squares varied in size from 12 to 6 inches and were created using diverse materials, techniques and subject matters. Each square tells a story, shares a memory, a feeling or an emotion of what this important landscape means to them. Together they create a quilt that embodies the complexity and diversity of the Greenbelt.
The Quilt of Possibilities ultimately explores our relationship with the Greenbelt and how it inspires us. It celebrates the positive role that the Greenbelt plays in our lives, including its ability to bridge urban and rural life with the preservation of Ontario’s rich natural environment.
As you take a moment to enjoy the Quilt of Possibilities we invite you to reflect on what role the Greenbelt plays in your life:

Possibility grows in the Greenbelt. Wrapping around the Golden Horseshoe, the Greenbelt is 1.8 million acres of potential to make Ontario, and the earth, a better place. Encompassing the Niagara Escarpment, the Oak Ridges Moraine, Rouge Park, hundreds of rural towns and villages and some 7,100 farms, Ontario's Greenbelt is one of the largest and most diverse in the world.
